Table Mountain

Table Mountain — a World Heritage Site — is one of South Africa's most famous landmarks. Nowhere else in the world does an area of such spectacular beauty and such rich bio-diversity exist almost entirely within a metropolitan area.

Robben Island

Robben Island

The world-renowned Robben Island Museum is one of South Africa's top historical attractions. The island is most famous for being the place where Nelson Mandela, the first democratically elected president of South Africa, was imprisoned for 18 years.

NORTHERN CAPE

Richtersveld (4x4)

The Richtersveld National Park is a 162 445 m2 hectare mountain desert at the northern-most extremity of South Africa. This water-scarce desert with its rugged kloofs, high mountains and dramatic landscapes sustains a remarkable range of small reptiles, birds, mammals and desert flora. The reserve is only accessible by 4x4 and high-clearance vehicles.

Cederberg Mountains

The Cederberg Wilderness Area is known for its untouched beauty, breathtaking rock formations and rare Clanwilliam cedar tree. San and Khoi peoples inhabited the Cederberg area from early times, and rock paintings that may be anything from 300 to 6 000 years old can still be seen here. The leopard is the Cederberg's largest predator, and is fairly common although very shy. The Cederberg Wilderness Area offers unsurpassed opportunities for hiking, rock climbing and swimming in pristine rivers and rock pools.

Camping out

River rafting on the Gariep

Experience the tranquillity as well as the power of the mighty Orange River — now called by its ancient Nama name Gariep — from an inflatable canoe. During the day, you will encounter rapids, still water, bird life and beautiful scenery. At night, you will camp along the river bed and gaze at the brightest Southern Hemisphere night sky you will ever witness.

Sutherland Observatory

Visit Sutherland — the place with the lowest temperatures and clearest night sky in South Africa. This is where you will find the largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, a telescope so powerful that you will be able to see something as faint as a candle flame at the distance of the moon. That is why Sutherland is also called the gateway to the universe.
